The Role of Advertising in Our Economy

Monday, April 6th, 2009

We in America live and prosper in a dynamic economy. Ours has been
and is an economy of relative abundance which has succeeded in bringing
about a material well-being never before known in history. It is an
economy which emphasizes consumption! In this country consumption does
not necessarily mean wearing out goods in a physical sense. We wear out
goods psychologically as well. Our hats are discarded because they are
psychologically worn out, not because they are physically done in.
Usually our clothes are psychologically worn out and discarded while
the material is still good. We dispose of our automobiles when they
become obsolete rather than when they are physically worn out. How
different is this viewpoint from the practices that are current in
other nations, England and France, for instance!

It is difficult for the European to understand the economic
importance of the individual in our country and the American idea of
psychological obsolescence. It is also incomprehensible to most that in
America we spend nearly eight billion dollars a year for advertising!

Why do we do it? What is advertising’s role in our economy? What useful purpose does advertising serve?

I shall undertake to develop my observations why advertising is essential to our dynamic way of life:

First, advertising makes jobs.

Second, advertising reduces selling costs.

Third, advertising increases company profits.

Fourth, advertising increases company security.

and finally, our enormous and growing productivity needs advertising to speed up consumption.

Advertising makes more jobs for more people. Yes, it is a fact that
by creating a growing demand for new products, advertising makes jobs.
A few examples. The automobile, of course, is the classic one. To be
sure, it eliminated the village smithy, the buggy maker, and the livery
stable, but it revolutionized our way of living and it opened
opportunities never before possible. When you think what has been
accomplished in the era of the automobile, when you think of all the
jobs that are made possible by the five million and more automobiles
sold in the United States every year, when you think what this has
meant in the way of new jobs, ranging all the way from the thousands of
motels, restaurants and gas stations, to the enormous development of
our national parks, it gives some idea of what the automobile has
contributed to our society.

Was it the first automobile, or the first hundred, or the first
thousand that brought this about? No! It was the mass production of
customers for automobiles that has brought the automobile to its
present importance in our economy. Mass consumption made mass
production possible and advertising is largely responsible for bringing
about mass consumption, and the jobs, that the development of the
automobile has created.

To cite another example in a totally different field, deodorants.
Remember the day not so long ago when Lifebuoy was the only deodorant
product with any appreciable volume? Today the deodorant business has
grown to major proportions, and this has been accomplished without
taking away from any other business, including perfumes! This is
another example where demand created by mass consumption methods
resulted in a new industry with attendant jobs, and one which has been
developed without taking away from any existing business.

The new instant dessert puddings can be cited as another example.
Puddings have not moved as rapidly as they might have in recent years.
Along came the instant pudding and look what happened. Sales of all
dessert puddings are up one-third as the result of the introduction of
something new, the instant pudding, which revitalized an old and
somewhat static business by the introduction of a new product idea,
extensively promoted through advertising.

It all adds up to the fact that mass consumption makes mass
production possible and mass production means more jobs. Advertising,
because of its ability to accelerate the regular acceptance of new
products and to lift the level of acceptability of established
products, unleashes a tremendous flood of new demand, and new
employment.

The critics say advertising causes people to spend needlessly. By a
narrow definition this may be true. But our whole economy, which has
brought us so much prosperity, emphasizes consumption. And
psychological obsolescence is a factor of importance in that
consumption.

What advertising does, and does well, is to increase what might be
called the “want ability” of goods. The more want able goods become,
the greater the prospect that money will be exchanged for those goods,
and this in turn spells continued employment and more jobs.

Golfing Holidays In France

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

With stunning surroundings and wonderful gastronomy really makes
France a top destination for golfers and from Biarritz to Brittany,
France can offer a great variety of uncrowded golf courses, which range
from the novice to the more experienced golfer. In fact some of the
very top rated courses in Europe can be found in France!

In the South there is a terrific variety of golf courses plus the
cuisine and temperate climate make this a great destination for all
year round golfing holidays.

Also, France is ideal for a golf break at any time of year, with
courses in all regions of France and with around a hundred new golf
courses having been built over the past few years, and over 500 in
total, you certainly have plenty of choice!

And although golf is a very popular past time in many countries, the
game does not have the same popularity in France as it does in places
like the United Kingdom, as they are more into sports such as cycling,
and this is probably why you can still get to experience golf in peace
and tranquillity at your own pace and not like being on a conveyor belt
or being rushed when you least need it!

Now the main golfing areas most people think of in France are
centred around places near to Le Touquet and Biarritz, but there are
numerous other excellent golf courses dotted all over the country and
some are still virtually undiscovered, which can mean some inexpensive
quality time for the golfer when travelling through France.

One popular area is Provence and the Cote d Azur which have golf
courses from Monte Carlo to the Pyrenees and one of these would make an
ideal destination for a longer golfing holiday especially with the
weather. But in the Rhone Alpes region are private hotels with their
own golf courses set amidst the stunning mountain scenery.

The fairways within the Loire and Burgundy regions are either a
short flight to France or easy drive for most people and are in the
ideal location for those that want other things to occupy them when not
on the golf course.

If you are looking for a golf weekend or golf holiday, there is so
much choice, but if you prefer a slightly cooler climate than the South
of France, then the regions of Brittany, Normandy and Pas de Calais are
good options, plus with well over 130 golf courses that are suitable
for most handicaps along with very reasonable green fees, the short
trip across the channel by ferry or short flight can make for a very
reasonable weekend break with your golfing friends.

And in the Ile de France region, which hosts the capital of France,
Paris, you have over 60 different golf courses to choose from, so it is
very easy to slip away from the city and have a day of peace and
tranquillity on the golf course with your work colleagues. Or if you
are on holiday with your family you could combine some sight seeing in
Paris with a half-day of golf while your family could enjoy some
delicious French food at the clubhouse in settings of absolute beauty.

We all realise that the Loire valley is famous for its chateaux, but
there are also numerous golf courses amongst the splendour of this
region and what better place to play a round of golf, then enjoy the
fine wine over a nice lunch before heading back to your accommodation.

Looking at the South West of France, which has a varied landscape
and culture is an ideal place to enjoy the French food, wine, maybe
even visiting some chateaux, glorious beaches, vineyards, distilleries
and museums, so this area has so much to offer besides the golf, of
which there are around 90 courses, which means that no one in your
holiday party will become bored.

However, if you love sight seeing, being able to see snow capped
mountains all year round or glorious beaches, then the South East of
France is definitely the place for you, and with well over 100 golf
courses to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice in this region,
although you may find that your budget dictates a little, as some of
the green fees can be far more expensive than the courses in the North
of France.

Another region is Sologne, which is situated just south of Orleans
and is famous for its lakes and its excellent hunting and fishing, yet
has now also become a popular destination for golfers, who like
experiencing the fine French food and wine in this area, and you will
find delights such as pheasant, partridge, venison, wild boar, carp,
eel and trout on the menu.

Yet the area around Bordeaux has now emerged as a great golfing area
where one can not only enjoy the courses amid vineyards, but also get
to experience the wine, which is another ideal place to enjoy the best
of both pleasures!

So whether you decide to arrange the golf holiday to France yourself
or go for a complete package holiday, you can discover fairways that
rank some of the best in Europe, plus some virtually undiscovered gems.

Just Enjoy!

Facts About Caffeine

Caffeine

1. How much should Caffeine should be taken?

Adults should limit their intake to about 250mg per day. Pregnant women should be much more conservative with their intake.

2. What are it’s effects and is there scientific evidence to prove it?
Caffeine is used to boost energy and is perfect to super energize your
body for powerful workouts. It is a fast-acting substance that delivers
the right molecular structure to your energy systems for maximum energy
and power output. Caffeine acts like Ephedra to increase alertness and
provide the neurological surge you need to train to the max. However,
it is not just a stimulant. This powerful substance works right into
the muscle cell to provide lasting power and delays muscle fatigue.
So how does caffeine provide you with maximum energy and increased
endurance? Caffeine causes more alertness and increases levels of
focus. The structure of caffeine is very similar to that of adenine (C
5 H 5 N 5; 6-aminopurine; a component of ATP, DNA, and cyclic AMP).
This explains why caffeine has such a stimulating effect. Because of
the structural similarities, caffeine can fit into adenosine receptors,
keeping cyclic AMP active rather than it being broken down. When cyclic
AMP is broken down, the body’s supply of energy decreases. Caffeine
fools the body into using enzymes instead to break it down; the cyclic
AMP supply stays at a higher level for longer!

3. Who really needs to take it?
Nobody actually needs caffeine per se, but articles that have been
written said if all of America were to stop drinking
caffeine-containing drinks, productivity would fall by 70%. So, anyone
who wants to be more alert and needs a mental or physical boost could
use caffeine safely. Anyone who does not like coffee or who doesn’t
want to drink caffeinated drinks could easily supplement their diets
with an energy-enhancing supplement that contains caffeine.

4. What is it and where does it come from?
Caffeine was discovered in 1820. In 1838, it was found that theine, a
substance in tea, was chemically identical to caffeine. A handful of
caffeine containing plants are used more around the world as a beverage
than any other plants or herbs put together. Some of the many natural
plants containing caffeine are: Coffee, Tea, Kola, Cocoa, and Guarana.
Caffeine is an alkaloid; of which there are numerous compounds such as
the methylxanthines, with three distinguished compounds: caffeine,
theophylline, and theobromine, found in guarana, kola nuts, coffee,
tea, cocoa beans, mate and other plants. These compounds have different
biochemical effects, and are present in different ratios in the
different plant sources.
Caffeine is the most popular drug in the World. It is a strong
stimulant to the Central Nervous System. Moderate use provides positive
effects for everyone, male and female; although excessive use can cause
unwanted side effects.

How To Survive Menopause Naturally

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

One
thought that will be haunting today’s young women is that they will
have to pass through the menopause period. The common menopause
symptoms are night sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, itching and
burning. These menopause symptoms will make the young women feel like
they are in hell. The menopause symptoms are not limited to the above
mentioned ones. In addition to these common menopause symptoms some
women experience an uncontrollable urge to urination. This will affect
the mental health of the women. Though menopause is associated with
several other problems, thankfully there are some natural remedies for
menopause.

The Ideal Food for Women in during Menopause Period
According to various researches conducted to deal with menopause
symptoms, it was found that consuming foods with plant estrogens will
help to control cholesterol along with controlling the menopause
symptoms. Consuming foods rich in plant estrogens is one of the best
natural remedies for menopause. When it comes to foods rich in plant
estrogens, there are several items to choose from. Lima beans, seeds,
soy products, celery, nuts, parsley, and flaxseed oil are rich in plant
estrogens. Hence consuming an ideal meal with all these estrogen rich
items will help women to overcome the menopause period with ease.

Don’t avoid exercise
Proper diet and exercise are indispensable during the menopause period.
Many people avoid exercise during the menopause period, thinking that
it will harm their health. This thinking is totally wrong. Lack of
exercise during the menopause period will increase the menopause
symptoms. Inactivity during the menopause period will put women in the
risk of abnormal weight gain, osteoporosis and heart problems along
with increasing the common menopause symptoms. Estrogen which protects
the heart and bones will drastically fall down the normal level during
menopause. This loss of estrogen is one of the menopause symptoms which
should be compensated by healthy diet and effective exercise.

Meditation for dealing with psychological issues
The menopause symptoms lead to many psychological problems in most of
the women. Hence it is necessary to maintain good mental health along
with physical health. As there are many natural remedies for menopause
for maintaining physical health, you don’t have to worry about it. When
it comes to mental health the only natural remedy available is
meditation. You will be well aware of the fact that meditation is an
excellent stress buster. Hence meditation plays an important role in
maintaining mental health during menopause.

Menopause occurs naturally and hence it cannot be grouped under any
kinds of diseases. While a few women will be able to pass through the
menopause period without any medical attention, many others need some
special care for dealing with the menopause symptoms. There are many
kinds of natural health care products available for controlling the
menopause symptoms. Thanks for the advancements in the healthcare
industry

Are We There Yet? A Travel Guide For Parents

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

You’ve all heard of the horror stories of family trips. No matter
how long you are staying at your chosen destination, when traveling
with children the longest part of the trip can be your journey there.
Kids get fidgety, even aggressive during especially long car rides or
airplane rides. You will need plenty of activities to keep their minds
busy.

1. Keep Them Busy

Chances are, unless you are going to a very kid-centric location,
your children will be very bored. Try purchasing travel games such as
tiny versions of chess or checkers. There are also plenty of low cost
games you can play in a car like eye spy or 20 questions. Having a
variety of games and activities to keep their children occupied and
keep their minds off of the journey is always a good idea.

2. For Long Car Rides

Keep in mind when designing an itinerary of games that children
typically get tired of playing the same game twice. For your benefit,
you can design games that take a long time to complete. For example,
you can play the ABC game. In this game, you have to find all the
letters of the alphabet from signs, licence plates, etc. Letters can
only be found outside the car and must be verified by others in the car
to make sure that they are not just making up signs. As an added
challenge and to prevent cheating, you can remove licence plates from
the possible things you can get letters from. It can be quite difficult
to find the letters Q,U,V,X,Y and Z. To keep things interesting you can
make it a race and whoever finishes the alphabet first wins. This is a
great game for small children as it reinforces their learning the
alphabet.

3. Keep Things Novel

You might want to buy some new toys or games for your children. A
new book, especially, can last an entire trip if your child loves to
read. Just be careful, however, as reading while in a car can, for some
people, make them feel nauseous.

4. Babies & Flights

Lot’s of parents wonder whether or not they should bring their
baby’s car seat with them when they go on a plane. The question to ask
is are you going to be travelling by car at your destination? If so
they you’ll need to bring the car seat anyway. If you are not
travelling by car and forget or decide not to bring your car seats, you
can sometimes rent them. In general however it’s a better idea to take
the car seat with you. Another tip is to give your baby a bottle while
the plane is taking off to calm them down and prevent your baby’s ears
from popping.

5. Strollers

Let’s face it even tiny babies feel heavy after a while in your
arms, and don’t forget about toddlers who all of the sudden tell you
they can’t walk any longer (often they tell you this at the most
inconvenient times). A baby stroller solves these problems. The great
thing is that most infant car seats snap onto a travel system stroller.
This makes it both simple and easy to take both the stroller and the
baby seat along on trips. The other option is a lightweight stroller
that has a built in carrying strap, that’s comfortable and easy to haul
around

The Wonder Of Disney

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

The wondrous world of Disney began when an 18 year old artist,
Walter Elias Disney, had a fantasy. At the time, Disney was working in
Kansas City as a professional artist at the Pesmin-Rubin Commercial Art
Studio. In 1923, this amazing artist produced a series of Alice
Comedies for J.M. Wrinkler and this creation led to the creation of
Disney Studio. In fact, by 1923, Walter created Mickey Mouse in
Steamboat Willie in 1927 and this character has not stopped
entertaining children and adults alike. Eventually, Steamboat Willie
became fully synchronized with sound.

For his first color cartoon in 1932, “Flowers and Trees”, Walt
received the first ever Oscar awarded to an animated film. In 1932,
another character as famous as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck made his
appearance.

The Mind behind the Magic

Today the concept behind Walter’s creation is the most popular
holiday destination in the United States. Walt Disney wanted to create
a park where families with kids could have fun together. Initial plans
of Disneyland were to use 8 acres of land only, but with the expansion
of dreams, 8 acres were not enough. Today, Disneyland, California is
spread over 180 acres. Construction of Disneyland began on July 21,
1954. The design was something never done before. The plan included
five different lands - the Magic Kingdom.

- Main Street, U.S.A. was where people relive the typical turn of the century city Main Street.

- Adventureland was an “exotic tropical place” in the remote jungles of Asia and Africa.

- Frontierland was where people try to relive the pioneer days of the American frontier.

- Fantasyland was created where classic stories of everyone’s youth
became realities for youngsters of all ages to participate in.

- Tomorrowland looked at the marvels of the future.

This $17,000,000 magical park, Disneyland, was opened on for public on July 17, 1955.

With the success of Disneyland, Walt Disney had a vision of an
amusement park on a much bigger scale. He decided to have his new
Disneyland in the East. With a good year-round weather, Orlando,
Florida was selected to be the place. Initially, 27,000 acres of
swampland was purchased in 1964-65, in Florida. Walt Disney called this
new park Disneyworld, which was later, after his death, changed to Walt
Disney World, by his brother Roy.

Like Disneyland, his plans for Disneyworld included the Magic
Kingdom. His plans also included the city of the future - which he
called an experimental prototype community of tomorrow (EPCOT).
He wanted EPCOT to display all possible scientific advances. Walt
Disney died on December 15, 1966, without seeing Disneyworld and EPCOT.
His brother, Roy Disney, ensured that Walt’s dream was completed and
Walt Disney World opened to the public on October 1, 1971.

Thanks to Walt Disney and his family, we have two great Disney Parks
in the United States to enjoy. Walter Disney was the man behind the
dream and his brother, Roy, continued manifesting the dream. Today,
Disney World, the second of the dream series, is the most popular of
all the theme parks in the world and covers an area of 30,500 acres or
about 47 square miles and Disney Land, the first of the dream series,
is also quite popular. The dream of Walt Disney continues to spin The
Magic of Disney and will do so for many years.
