The Role of Advertising in Our Economy

Monday, April 6th, 2009

We in America live and prosper in a dynamic economy. Ours has been
and is an economy of relative abundance which has succeeded in bringing
about a material well-being never before known in history. It is an
economy which emphasizes consumption! In this country consumption does
not necessarily mean wearing out goods in a physical sense. We wear out
goods psychologically as well. Our hats are discarded because they are
psychologically worn out, not because they are physically done in.
Usually our clothes are psychologically worn out and discarded while
the material is still good. We dispose of our automobiles when they
become obsolete rather than when they are physically worn out. How
different is this viewpoint from the practices that are current in
other nations, England and France, for instance!

It is difficult for the European to understand the economic
importance of the individual in our country and the American idea of
psychological obsolescence. It is also incomprehensible to most that in
America we spend nearly eight billion dollars a year for advertising!

Why do we do it? What is advertising’s role in our economy? What useful purpose does advertising serve?

I shall undertake to develop my observations why advertising is essential to our dynamic way of life:

First, advertising makes jobs.

Second, advertising reduces selling costs.

Third, advertising increases company profits.

Fourth, advertising increases company security.

and finally, our enormous and growing productivity needs advertising to speed up consumption.

Advertising makes more jobs for more people. Yes, it is a fact that
by creating a growing demand for new products, advertising makes jobs.
A few examples. The automobile, of course, is the classic one. To be
sure, it eliminated the village smithy, the buggy maker, and the livery
stable, but it revolutionized our way of living and it opened
opportunities never before possible. When you think what has been
accomplished in the era of the automobile, when you think of all the
jobs that are made possible by the five million and more automobiles
sold in the United States every year, when you think what this has
meant in the way of new jobs, ranging all the way from the thousands of
motels, restaurants and gas stations, to the enormous development of
our national parks, it gives some idea of what the automobile has
contributed to our society.

Was it the first automobile, or the first hundred, or the first
thousand that brought this about? No! It was the mass production of
customers for automobiles that has brought the automobile to its
present importance in our economy. Mass consumption made mass
production possible and advertising is largely responsible for bringing
about mass consumption, and the jobs, that the development of the
automobile has created.

To cite another example in a totally different field, deodorants.
Remember the day not so long ago when Lifebuoy was the only deodorant
product with any appreciable volume? Today the deodorant business has
grown to major proportions, and this has been accomplished without
taking away from any other business, including perfumes! This is
another example where demand created by mass consumption methods
resulted in a new industry with attendant jobs, and one which has been
developed without taking away from any existing business.

The new instant dessert puddings can be cited as another example.
Puddings have not moved as rapidly as they might have in recent years.
Along came the instant pudding and look what happened. Sales of all
dessert puddings are up one-third as the result of the introduction of
something new, the instant pudding, which revitalized an old and
somewhat static business by the introduction of a new product idea,
extensively promoted through advertising.

It all adds up to the fact that mass consumption makes mass
production possible and mass production means more jobs. Advertising,
because of its ability to accelerate the regular acceptance of new
products and to lift the level of acceptability of established
products, unleashes a tremendous flood of new demand, and new
employment.

The critics say advertising causes people to spend needlessly. By a
narrow definition this may be true. But our whole economy, which has
brought us so much prosperity, emphasizes consumption. And
psychological obsolescence is a factor of importance in that
consumption.

What advertising does, and does well, is to increase what might be
called the “want ability” of goods. The more want able goods become,
the greater the prospect that money will be exchanged for those goods,
and this in turn spells continued employment and more jobs.

History of Guitars

Monday, April 6th, 2009

The history of guitars traces back to India and Central Asia. It is
derived from the Sitara. The oldest known iconographic depiction of an
instrument displaying all the required features of a guitar is a 3300
year old stone carving of a Hittite bard. Earlier a guitar was known to
be an instrument with a long, fretted neck, flat wooden soundboard,
ribs, and a flat back, most often with incurved sides. The modern
guitar owes its origin from the Spanish guitarra derived from the Latin
word cithara. Cithara comes from the Greek word kithara, perhaps
derived from Persian sihtar, which in turn related to Indian Sitara.

Following the history of guitars the modern guitar comes from the
Roman cithara brought by the Romans to Hispania around 40 AD. They
further modified and developed it with the entrance of the four string
oud, brought by the Moors. In other parts of Europe, the native six
strings Scandinavian lut (lute) had gained in reputation in areas of
Viking incursions across the continent.

The composers for the string instruments wrote mostly in tablature
notation. During the 17th century, Italy was said to be the capital of
the guitar world. In France, the guitar was considered to be the
instrument of the nobility. The Spanish school of guitar creation
flourished after the end of the eighteenth century. The works and
composition of the composers traveled widely including the Italians
composers who were involved in a number of substantial works.

One of the most vital factors in the history of guitars was the
addition of the sixth string during the middle of the eighteenth
century. The changes in social conditions and improvement in the mode
of transportation during the 19th Century contributed to the growing
understanding of the guitar and enabled performers to travel with their
composition. Guitar music thrived Spain more than others in the 19th
century.

The early 20th century saw the European emigrants coming to America
brought a number of highly skilled instrument makers among them,
including those who were expert in the manufacturing of steel stringed
acoustic guitar. Two types of construction evolved, the flat top guitar
and the arch top guitar. Martin and Gibson were two of the original and
most significant of all American acoustic guitar makers.

A well recognized name in the history of guitars, Antonio Torres
Jurado (1817 to1892), developed the modern feature of the guitar in
Seville during the 1850s. George Beauchamp in 1936 patented the
electric guitar, which used the horseshoe magnet pickup. However,
Danelectro was the first to produce electric guitars for the wider
public.

The requirement for something with an amplified sound became
noticeable during the big band era of history of guitars. Amplified
devices became necessary in order to fight with the loud volumes of the
large brass sections common to jazz orchestras of the thirties and
forties. To begin with the component of electric guitar, this consisted
primarily of hollow archtop acoustic guitar bodies to which
electromagnetic transducers had been fixed.

The original recognized use of the electric guitar in the history of
guitars was during October 1932 in Wichita, Kansas by guitarist and
bandleader Gage Brewer who acquired two instruments directly from
George Beauchamp of Los Angeles, California. The first recording of an
electric guitar was by jazz guitarist George Barnes. He recorded two
songs in Chicago on March 1st, 1938. These were Sweetheart Land and It
is a Low Down Dirty Shame.

Family Cycling Holidays in France

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Cyclists of all abilities can look forward to some fantastic scenery
whilst on a cycling holiday in france, along with experiencing
traditional French cuisine in the many hotels you stop at on your
travels through the scenic countryside.

France is a country that is extremely enthusiastic about cycling, as
we are all no doubt well aware with the Tour de France, and they have
made it ever so easy to explore the countryside and cities on two
wheels, with dedicated cycle paths and routes all around.

Cycling holidays will give you peace and tranquillity with awesome
views of countryside, chateaux, medieval towns, hilltops, valleys and
gorges and these are just some of things that you would easily miss out
on if you were driving through France, and with the rich heritage,
extraordinary landscapes and the gastronomic delights can all be
appreciated more whilst cycling, especially because of the extensive
national network of veloroutes.

These veloroutes will take you along canal towpaths, quiet country
lanes and converted railway lines as well as getting you into the heart
of the countryside by using voies vertes, also known as green ways,
which are specially designated tracks that are completely shut to
motorised traffic, you can even hire your cycle en route from one of
many locations-velos that line the major cycling routes.

You can still find areas in France that are so peaceful, it is rare
to see a car, yet you may be passed by a few very passionate cyclists!
Stopping for lunch and experiencing the local cuisine and of course the
local wine is must and you can often find fortified villages scattered
along the hill-tops and valleys for the most pleasant of stops.

Or if you prefer to have your trip organised then why not let the
hoteliers transport your luggage by finding establishments that offer
an “accueil velo” which are hotels and bed and breakfasts that cater
specifically for cycling holidays throughout France.

With a French Alps cycling holiday you cannot go wrong, as you will
be able to discover some of the Worlds most spectacular cycling routes,
with climbs like the world famous Col de la Croix der Fer and Alpe
d’Huez around Grenoble. But as well as the Alps, cycling in the
Pyrenees with its mountain climbs such as the Col de Portet d’Aspet and
the Col d’Aspin will provide you with the opportunity to see some of
Europe’s most beautiful locations. Although these are not for the feint
hearted! If you have ever watched the Tour de France, you will have
seen some of those mean mountainous routes and the suffering these
cyclists go through, yet perhaps this could be just the type of holiday
you are looking for!

Also, the Midi-Pyrenees offers a wealth of art and history from
prehistoric cave paintings to Renaissance mansions and is also famous
throughout France for its cuisine which is rich with foies gras,
Roquefort cheese, Gaillac wines, and Armagnac brandy, but to make the
most of this region, it is often advisable to plan your cycling holiday
very carefully, so that you can enjoy the many different places en
route.

Yet if mountain biking and going on strenuous cycling routes through
the mountains is not you, then do not worry, there are plenty of other
areas in France that will cater for the novice or the family cycling
holiday, just like Brittany, this area is ideal for a family cycling
holiday, as the coastal routes along the bays are reasonably flat,
making the trip easier, whereas the Loire is more undulating, yet
fabulous chateaux and riverside towns will enthral you and the family
on your travels.

What about the Poitou-Charentes area, which is an excellent choice
for those who love wildlife and bird watching, as the area is still
extremely rural, even compared to some of the other areas in France and
Burgundy is a great place to cycle along the many canal paths.

Then there is the Dordogne which is extremely picturesque, and from
the rivers and gorges through to forests and vineyards, this area
provides such a diversity you will enjoy the whole experience from the
start to finish of your holiday.

Mind you, with a cycling holiday organised for you, there is no need
to worry about where you will stop for a break or lunch or where you
will be staying, which means you do not have to have your panniers full
to the brim, as all your belongings are transported on for you, ready
and waiting for when you arrive at your next stop, plus if you decide
to add in other activities, such as canoeing and horse riding as well,
then your bikes will be transported to your next stop and you will be
picked up at a specified location.

So whether you are a cycling enthusiast or a novice with a family, France is a fantastic destination to explore on your bike.
