Paris: A Gastronomical Delight

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Is there anything without which France travel remains incomplete? Don’t
we all love food! However, perhaps not more than the French who have
transformed food and its preparation to an art. And this is what you
cannot allow to ignore on your journey to France. The French are known
for their cooking skills. Therefore, one of the best experiences about
France travel is to get a bite of the gastronomical delights that have
delighted almost all the connoisseurs of food of all countries and all
periods. Parisians adore their food and this passion is reflected in
their cooking as well. There are enough restaurants scattered all
around Paris to realize your desires. Whether it is specialty cuisine
that you are seeking or just a great bar to let down your hair, Paris
doesn’t won’t disapppoint anyone.

One can simply find restaurants, which provide cuisines from other
cultures and countries as well as French cooking at very affordable
prices. If you are missing the food of your country while traveling
just buy one of the guidebooks to find the great place that will
provide the home made food. Specialties from the different corners of
France are also available in restaurants scattered all through the
city. History of France travel states that these contain unique items
from Normandy as well as the south of France, which are known for their
exotic cooking. While staying in Paris it is important to invest in a
guide booklet that gives you a general idea of the restaurants in and
around the city as well as a record of do’s and don’ts that can help
you both save money as well as offer you convenience that can vary from
choosing the right restaurant to paying just the correct tip. Some of
the pleasures of France travel lies within French food diffusing its
richness on minds.

Restaurants in Paris can vary from the more luxurious kinds of places
where one has to be in just the right proper attire and behave in the
most impeccable way to trendy locations where the idea is just to have
a whole lot of fun! Before deciding to travel to France, you may have
to brush up on some of the traditions. France travel becomes more
enjoyable with simple availability of informal ambiences where one can
have a great dinner with coffee and wine.

Almost all the restaurants have a menu that is offered in a translated
form for the non-French visitors of the city. Most of these accept all
the major credit cards available in the world and there are unique
discounts and facilities opened to tourists who are traveling in
groups. If you are visiting Paris, make sure to savor some of the most
prevalent French delicacies and specialties like the French breads,
Blanquette de veau, Boeuf a la mode, Coq au Vin, and croissants. Some
of the best and reasonably priced restaurants that you can enjoy to
sample some of these French delights, are Laduree, Chez Castel, and
Bermuda Onion. So as you get eager to pack your bags to travel to
France, Bon Appetit!

Cyclists are Most Welcome in the Land of the Tour de France

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

The Loire Valley just two hours south of Paris has the greatest concentration of chateaux in France. This region was once a favourite hangout of French Renaissance kings who built magnificent chateaus along the Loire River (the longest river in France and the last of the wild rivers in Europe) to entertain in lavish style while enjoying the incredible beauty of the landscape.

Often called the Garden of France, it is a traditional land of sleepy towns full of narrow streets, old-fashioned cafes and markets, imposing cathedrals and opulent chateaux. The words ‘ornate’ and ‘charming’ immediately spring to mind. Strategically important during the Hundred Years War, fashionable among the Parisian rich during the Renaissance, this is France’s legendary castle country.

Today, the Loire Valley continues to lure visitors to explore the splendid French countryside with its historic castles and abbeys, and to taste some of the best food and wines in the world. The vineyards around Tours thrive on the fertile soil around the river and its tributaries, and many producers are well prepared to receive visitors and are more than happy for them to try a glass or two.

A great way to experience this gorgeous valley is on two wheels - on a bike tour along the Loire a Velo trail - a 300-mile bike trail made up of country paths and small roads that winds along the Loire River through the enchanting villages and towns of the Loire Valley. The trail meanders exquisitely beside France’s longest and most evocative river. The trail will surely become one of the most popular in Europe, partly for the extraordinary views and tranquil atmosphere.

A special “Loire a Velo” handbook has been produced to mark the project, and is an excellent companion for visiting families wishing to see the Loire Valley on two wheels. It allows cyclists to select a route to suit, discovering lesser-known areas of the Loire, chateaux, wildlife and culture.

The Loire biking season runs from April to October.
No, you don’t have to be Lance Armstrong to bike the Loire a Velo trail. That is just it. The whole point is to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Biking clubs will zoom past you on country roads, dressed to the nines in their colourful racing outfits because the Loire Valley is also a favourite destination for serious bikers as well. Remember you are in the land of the Tour de France.

How I learnt to speak French in 3 months from audio books

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Of course, I was taught French during my school
days but never took it seriously. As far as I was concerned, it wasn’t
important to me and never would be.

After all, English was more popular and I could get along anywhere in the world with my knowledge of English language, right?

How dead wrong I was.

I realized my mistake when I was sent to France for an assignment. I was like a real fish out of water.

Everywhere I went, everyone was speaking French. Finding someone who
could speak English was like finding someone in England who could speak
Japanese.

Whew, I really felt lost.

Nonetheless, I made a silent resolve not to learn the language, since I wasn’t going to be coming back to France.

But on getting back home, my boss told me I would be going back in 3 months. This time I would stay longer.

I protested, but she didn’t budge.

There and then I made a commitment to myself to learn French before the 3 months was up.

Being a lover of audio books, I went right ahead and bought “Teach
Yourself French” audio books, which I played while preparing for work
in the morning, while exercising, during my commute to and fro work and
any other time when my hands were busy but my mind was free.

At first I didn’t pay too much attention to what was being said in the
“Teach Yourself French” audio books because it was a strange language.

But as time went on, it all started to make sense. What really helped
was the translations to English for any word spoken in French.

This really confirmed what I had read sometime ago about the power of
listening. No wonder God gave us 2 ears and just one mouth. This means
just listening is powerful enough to learn virtually any language.

You wouldn’t believe it but gradually I picked up and was able to speak a significant amount of French just 6 weeks after.

You can imagine the surprise on the face of my boss when, 10 weeks
later, I spoke French to her without mixing it with a single word of
English!

She couldn’t believe it and asked me how I was able to do it. I told her - audio books!

Not only was she very impressed, she made me the head of the delegation she was sending to represent our company in France.

She made sure every other member of my team got their audio books and did exactly what I had done.

When I eventually went back to France 3 months later, I was no longer “a fish out of water”.

It was incredible, but I was able to achieve this without taking any
classes, without hiring any private French tutor, without reading any
“French tutorial” books.

All of this was possible within 3 months from just listening to French audio book lessons.

Do you know what was most intriguing about this? I did this all in my
“free” time. I didn’t commit any special time to this, but the same
time I had wasted in the past.

If I could do this within 3 months, I am certain anyone else can do it too.

If there is any language you would love to learn, follow my footsteps
and you will be pleasantly surprised what can happen in just 3 months,
with the power of audio books.

There are several audio book versions of many leading foreign language study courses that you can get on the Internet.

You can start your search from best-audiobook-store.com directly or via
the search engines. Simply type in the phrase or particular title you
are interested in and you will be presented with the best results…
within seconds.

France Casinos

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

France is home to a huge number of casinos,
both large and small, and is without a doubt the leader in the European
casino scene. France casinos are found throughout the country,
including several in Paris, but probably the most prestigious and
glamorous are to be found in the south of France, along the famous
Riviera, combining beautiful landscapes and fabulous weather with some
of the oldest and most historic casinos in Europe. Foreign travelers
flock to the south coast for a taste of the high life, and here as
elsewhere in the country, casinos form an essential part of the visitor
experience.

There are nearly 200 casinos in France, making it the country in Europe
with the most such establishments; the largest concentration in any one
city, unsurprisingly, is to be found in Paris, where there are eight
casinos. The largest casino in Paris is the Cercle Hausmann, which has
some 26 tables. However, France casinos are spread throughout the
country, reflecting the French love of gambling, and the central role
that France has played in the development of casinos (roulette was
invented here, as well as blackjack). Additionally, France casinos have
an ambience unlike those anywhere else, an elegance and tradition that
stands in stark contrast to the somewhat more brash charms of casinos
elsewhere, and a world away from the gaudy exuberance of Las Vegas.

Without doubt, the center of French gambling is the Riviera, or Cote
D’Azur, on the south coast. The casinos of Cannes, Nice, and Antibes
are among the most glamorous in the whole of Europe, and are must-see
attractions for anyone visiting this part of the country. The Riviera
is famed for its beautiful towns, chic shops, and almost year-round
sunshine, which helped it establish itself as one of Europe’s premier
winter resorts in times past, though nowadays it is in summer that the
region really comes alive. The most famous of all the casinos on the
south coast, of course, is the Monte Carlo Casino, which is nearly one
hundred and fifty years old. However, it is situated in Monaco, which
is not part of France, but an independent principality ruled by the
famous Grimaldi family.

Other famous France casinos can be found around the country, often at
seaside resorts such as Deauville and Biarritz. In each of these towns,
the casino has played a central role in the history and tradition of
the area, cementing the place of French casinos in the popular
imagination and making them an essential part of any visit to the
country.

5 Secrets to Studying Abroad in France

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

If studying abroad is wonderful then studying abroad in France is wondrous.

Here are some treasures on how to best explore one of the most
beautiful countries on earth in between all of those pesky tests and
papers…

1. Don’t bring anything that might have to be dry cleaned! You will
find doing your laundry in a Laundromat quite expensive compared to the
States, the prices for dry cleaning are astronomical, as it’s still not
a very common practice. Should you discover a red wine stain on your
favorite ‘dry clean only’ shirt that made its way into your suitcase
against better advise, look for a Pressing or Blachisserie and ask for
a “nettoyage à sec” (TIP: Before forking over for a dry cleaning bill,
the best way to get a red wine stain out of clothes is by pouring it’s
friend white wine all over it, honest!)

2. Because the water in France is a lot “softer” than in the
States, your hair and skin may not feel as clean even after washing.
For this reason, it’s best not to bring your own products from home,
but to buy products here that are specially adapted and produced
according to the minerals in the water. You can go to any of the beauty
supply stores and talk to a sales lady about it and they can direct you
to a product that’s right for you.

3. For a truly interesting movie going experience in Paris, be sure
to visit La Pagode. The manager of the store Bon Marché imported a real
pagoda from Japan for his wife to use as a ballroom! Unfortunately they
soon divorced, and it was turned into a movie theater that makes for a
brilliant experience…be sure to ask for the salle japonaise. (57 rue de
Babylone 75007)

4. When headed to the cinema, the matinees are always cheapest. But
pay attention to the rules of each movie house, because in some this
may be any film played before noon, but in others it may just be the
first film of the day. Many theaters also have reduced ticket prices on
Mondays and Wednesdays. (TIP: Be sure the film is in VO, version
originale, played in English with subtitles and not dubbed over in
French, VF!)

5. If you are studying abroad in Nice, be sure to visit one of the
few internet cafés in the city, located at 8 Rue Vincent, just at the
corner of Rue Pontin in the Old Town. They have wi-fi and cable TV,
great food and snack, and Happy Hour for drinks starting at 5 pm. Plus
it’s run by a lovely Englishman who has been living in Nice for over 15
years, and is a great resource on where to go and what to do in the
city.
