Saint Denis is a suburb around 10km from the centre of Paris along the river Seine and has specific claims to fame.

The first is that the area was named after Saint Denis who became
known as the Patron Saint of France, where St Genevieve had a small
chapel erected over his tomb for pilgrims to visit.

The second is that it is known for the Saint Denis Basilica where a
vast majority of French Kings are also entombed here and this was
rebuilt on the site of the chapel.

The third is for The Stade de France, which is the new stadium that
was built to host the 1998 FIFA world cup and has seen many other
events since.

If you have time whilst you are on holiday in the Paris area, taking
a trip out to St Denis is a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience
for all the family. And although it used to be more of a working class
industrial area, it is again now a thriving community since the stadium
has been built.

The stadium was a major feat of engineering with a very clever

classical music and the Banlieues Bleues Festival for jazz music
amongst others are held in this area every year.

more at home visiting the Basilique de Saint Denis, which even has life
size figures of the past monarchs that are entombed in it. And it is
steeped in history from when the basilica we see today was first begun
in the Gothic style way back in 1136 even though it was never finished

last king that was interred here, who was King Louis XVIII and is
comparable with Westminster Abbey in England where people still go and
worship.

The architecture and the beautiful stained glass windows that were
restored to their former glory, make for an impressive building and
today it remains the largest museum of funerary sculpture in France,
containing the tombs and recumbent statues of over 70 kings and queens.

We in America live and prosper in a dynamic economy. Ours has been
and is an economy of relative abundance which has succeeded in bringing
about a material well-being never before known in history. It is an
economy which emphasizes consumption! In this country consumption does
not necessarily mean wearing out goods in a physical sense. We wear out
goods psychologically as well. Our hats are discarded because they are
psychologically worn out, not because they are physically done in.
Usually our clothes are psychologically worn out and discarded while
the material is still good. We dispose of our automobiles when they
become obsolete rather than when they are physically worn out. How
different is this viewpoint from the practices that are current in
other nations, England and France, for instance!

It is difficult for the European to understand the economic
importance of the individual in our country and the American idea of
psychological obsolescence. It is also incomprehensible to most that in

I shall undertake to develop my observations why advertising is essential to our dynamic way of life:

First, advertising makes jobs.

Second, advertising reduces selling costs.

Third, advertising increases company profits.

and finally, our enormous and growing productivity needs advertising to speed up consumption.

Advertising makes more jobs for more people. Yes, it is a fact that
by creating a growing demand for new products, advertising makes jobs.
A few examples. The automobile, of course, is the classic one. To be
sure, it eliminated the village smithy, the buggy maker, and the livery
stable, but it revolutionized our way of living and it opened
opportunities never before possible. When you think what has been
accomplished in the era of the automobile, when you think of all the
jobs that are made possible by the five million and more automobiles
sold in the United States every year, when you think what this has
meant in the way of new jobs, ranging all the way from the thousands of
motels, restaurants and gas stations, to the enormous development of
our national parks, it gives some idea of what the automobile has
contributed to our society.

Was it the first automobile, or the first hundred, or the first
thousand that brought this about? No! It was the mass production of
customers for automobiles that has brought the automobile to its
present importance in our economy. Mass consumption made mass
production possible and advertising is largely responsible for bringing
about mass consumption, and the jobs, that the development of the
automobile has created.

To cite another example in a totally different field, deodorants.
Remember the day not so long ago when Lifebuoy was the only deodorant
product with any appreciable volume? Today the deodorant business has
grown to major proportions, and this has been accomplished without
taking away from any other business, including perfumes! This is
another example where demand created by mass consumption methods
resulted in a new industry with attendant jobs, and one which has been
developed without taking away from any existing business.

The new instant dessert puddings can be cited as another example.
Puddings have not moved as rapidly as they might have in recent years.
Along came the instant pudding and look what happened. Sales of all
dessert puddings are up one-third as the result of the introduction of
something new, the instant pudding, which revitalized an old and
somewhat static business by the introduction of a new product idea,
extensively promoted through advertising.

It all adds up to the fact that mass consumption makes mass
production possible and mass production means more jobs. Advertising,
because of its ability to accelerate the regular acceptance of new
products and to lift the level of acceptability of established
products, unleashes a tremendous flood of new demand, and new
employment.

The critics say advertising causes people to spend needlessly. By a
narrow definition this may be true. But our whole economy, which has
brought us so much prosperity, emphasizes consumption. And
psychological obsolescence is a factor of importance in that
consumption.

What advertising does, and does well, is to increase what might be
called the “want ability” of goods. The more want able goods become,
the greater the prospect that money will be exchanged for those goods,
and this in turn spells continued employment and more jobs.

The history of guitars traces back to India and Central Asia. It is

year old stone carving of a Hittite bard. Earlier a guitar was known to

The composers for the string instruments wrote mostly in tablature
notation. During the 17th century, Italy was said to be the capital of
the guitar world. In France, the guitar was considered to be the
instrument of the nobility. The Spanish school of guitar creation
flourished after the end of the eighteenth century. The works and
composition of the composers traveled widely including the Italians
composers who were involved in a number of substantial works.

One of the most vital factors in the history of guitars was the
addition of the sixth string during the middle of the eighteenth
century. The changes in social conditions and improvement in the mode
of transportation during the 19th Century contributed to the growing
understanding of the guitar and enabled performers to travel with their
composition. Guitar music thrived Spain more than others in the 19th
century.

The early 20th century saw the European emigrants coming to America
brought a number of highly skilled instrument makers among them,
including those who were expert in the manufacturing of steel stringed
acoustic guitar. Two types of construction evolved, the flat top guitar
and the arch top guitar. Martin and Gibson were two of the original and
most significant of all American acoustic guitar makers.

A well recognized name in the history of guitars, Antonio Torres
Jurado (1817 to1892), developed the modern feature of the guitar in
Seville during the 1850s. George Beauchamp in 1936 patented the
electric guitar, which used the horseshoe magnet pickup. However,
Danelectro was the first to produce electric guitars for the wider
public.

The requirement for something with an amplified sound became
noticeable during the big band era of history of guitars. Amplified
devices became necessary in order to fight with the loud volumes of the
large brass sections common to jazz orchestras of the thirties and
forties. To begin with the component of electric guitar, this consisted
primarily of hollow archtop acoustic guitar bodies to which
electromagnetic transducers had been fixed.

The original recognized use of the electric guitar in the history of
guitars was during October 1932 in Wichita, Kansas by guitarist and
